Procedures
Dental implants are titanium anchors that act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone. Small posts are then attached to the implant which protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves one surgical procedure. These are routinely done in the dental office using local anesthetic. For those patients that require further sedation, additional options are available. Many patients find that the placement of an implant is less traumatic than having a tooth removed. First, the implant is gently placed within your jawbone. For the first one to four months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat normally during this time. After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. The implants will be uncovered and a small attachment will be placed into the implants. You will then see your general dentist who will fabricate your new replacement teeth that will fit onto the attachments. During the entire process, most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily lives.
